if you're using Avast 4.6, change the web scanner to redirect to port 47900, otherwise it won't scan for anything.

Actually, avast would recommend:
Web Shield:
Enter into Proxy server (IE->Tools->Connections->Lan)
Address: 127.0.0.1
Port: 12080

E-Mail Scanning:
Internet Mail->Customize->Redirect->uncheck ignore local communication

Hello and allow me to give a helpful advise in order not to experience this kind of problems in the future. Try using the latest version of Kaspersky, 7.0 (http://www.trustdownload.com/Antivirus-and-Spyware-Cleaners/Antivirus/Kaspersky-Internet-Security-7.0.html) and you won't regret!
